Esprit Triathlon Rules

All rules of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and Triathlon Canada apply.
Understand the drafting violation rule.

DON'T GET DQ'ed

No race ever wants to have participants disqualified (DQ’ed).  Most DQ’s can be avoided by knowing the basic rules. Course marshals have the authority to disqualify participants. Here are a few general rules you need to know and abide by:

General rules that apply:

  • IPods and headphones are forbidden on the course.
  • Your torso must be covered at all times, except for the swim.
  • No outside help during the triathlon is permitted.
  • You must shower before going for a massage.  Hot showers are in the Athletes' Quarters.
  • Good sportsmanship is demanded from all participants. Any unsportsmanlike behavior is grounds for disqualification.
  • A “Thank You” to volunteers will go a long way in showing them how much we appreciate their generous contribution to the race.
  • Medical personnel shall have the ultimate and final authority to remove a participant from the race if they judge the participant to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury. Medical transport of any participant will result in disqualification.  If you withdraw from the race at any time, please notify any official with a walkie-talkie. For your own safety and our peace of mind, it is essential that we know where you are on the course at all times.

Transition Area

  • Only participants are permitted in the TA.
  • You must pick-up your race packet before entering the TA.
  • Your bike number must be on the bike, close to the handlebars before entering the TA.
  • You may only walk or run with your bike in the TA - no riding your bike.
  • Your helmet chinstrap must be fastened before leaving your bike rack and not unfastened until your bike is racked again.
  • You must mount/dismount your bike in the appropriate zones.
  • Once admitted into the transition area, do a walk-through to familiarize yourself with the layout.
  • At the end of the day, when exiting the TA after your race, you will be asked to show your bib number and your bike number.
  • In order to declutter the TA, and to increase its safety, there will be a bag drop off area. You will be asked to bring only your race gear into the TA.

Swim

  • Please see the infographics to understand wetsuit rules.
  • All swimmers must wear the swim cap provided by the race.
  • Be careful in the water. Let the fast swimmer leave before you. A wait of 10-20 seconds will assure you plenty of room. What's 10 seconds when you're racing for a long time?
  • You can request a silver cap from the swim official before your wave start. This will identify you as an athlete to “watch”.
  • We lay sand on the cement at the swim entrance and exit, but still, be careful entering and exiting the swim course.

Cycle

  • There is NO BIKE WARM UP.
  • There is NO DRAFTING allowed on the bike course.
  • IPods and headphones are forbidden on the course.
  • Slower riders, stay on the inside of the Circuit (on the left side) at all times.  Do not cut corners - this is for the fastest rider.
  • Your bike number must be on the bike, close to the handle bars before entering the TA.
  • There will be a bike repair station on the course. You may not have any other help in repairing a mechanical problem on your bike other than our official repair mechanics. You can either stop by the mechanical tent located at the hairpin, or you can ask a motorcycle to bring you one of our mechanics. You are never allowed to receive help from anyone else.
  • When you enter the bike course, move gradually to the inside of the Circuit. As you complete your final lap and are preparing to exit the bike course, make sure you are on the right side (outside) of the course, well in advance of the exit, so that you do not have to cross other cyclists.

Run

  • Your race number must be on your front during the run course.
  • IPods and headphones are forbidden on the course.
  • No pacers are permitted during the run.
  • For safety reasons, please do not bring your children with you to cross the finish line.

IMPORTANT: If you withdraw from the race at any time, please notify any official with a walkie-talkie. For your own safety and our peace of mind, it is essential that we know where you are on the course at all times.
