Our course is flat and offers you the best chance you'll ever get to beat your personal best time! The information contained in this section is specific to athletes who wish to complete the Demi-ESPRIT distance. The same information applies whether you will be doing the race on your own, or as part of a relay team.
The 1.9 km swim takes place in the Olympic rowing basin. The current-free basin is similar to a 2 km long, 100-meter wide and 3-meter deep swimming pool. The water has been tested and is consistently rated superior for swimming.
Based on past experiences, the water temperature is expected to be around 21°C (72°F). Wetsuits are recommended especially for long distances such as the Demi-ESPRIT. In order to complete the swim, you will have to swim down-and-back, run out of the water, over the bridge to the transition area. All athletes must cross over the bridge to get to the transition area. If you have a medical problem and cannot climb stairs, you may notify the swim exit marshall and run beside the bridge. Runners will have the right-of-way and you must stop for the runners. The marshall will escort you across the runners' path.
Helpful tip: While you swim, look for cables under the water normally used for the rowing lanes. Follow a cable and keep yourself in a straight line!
The 90 km bike portion of the race consists of completing 21 laps around the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, which is the site of the Formula One Canadian Grand-Prix. The 4.3 km loop has the best road surface in North America.
Our Pro-timing chip will count your laps. That being said, don't be afraid to follow your distance on your own odometer. Your lap count will be shown on a giant screen. Your name and bib number will appear on the monitor on lap 5, 10, 15, 19, 20, 21. When you see your name with the number 21, you must exit.

Aid Station: Our “pits” area is located right before the hairpin, on the left-hand side of the track. The aid station will provide bottled water, Pro-Circuit, bagels and bananas. Washrooms, mechanic and medical personnel are also in this area. Please discard all used bottles and other unwanted items in the hockey nets around the pits area. Please note that there will be NO MORE SPECIAL NEEDS BAGS. All athletes must have their necessities on their bikes or keep them in the transition area.
Relay Teams: Whether you are part of a men’s, women's or mixed team, you must set your bike on the correct bike rack clearly identified as Demi-Esprit - Relay Teams. This is where you will exchange the timing chip with your teammates.
Important Safety notes: As the athletes are cycling counter-clock wise, all cyclists should stay left except to pass. Remember to never cut the corners, as faster cyclists may be coming from behind. Once you are done your 21st lap, stay right at the hairpin in order to prepare to exit the course.
There will be no bike inspection as you are responsible for the safety of your equipment. Mechanics from MARTIN SWISS CYCLE will be on hand at registration and during the race to help you with any minor repairs or adjustments you may need.
The 21.1 km run starts at the back of the Transition Area where you will run directly onto the basin wall. You will circle the Olympic Rowing Basin and complete four and a half (4.5) laps. This means that you will be "running on water" halfway through the olympic basin on your last lap. The run course is flat and fast, and supporters will cheer you on as you run pass the grandstands and the Triathletes’ Village.
Aid Stations: There will be four (4) aid stations providing water, ice and ProCircuit products. Stations #1 and #3 will also provide Coke and pretzels, while #3 will also offer bananas.
Please note that there will be NO MORE SPECIAL NEEDS BAGS. All athletes must have their necessities on their bikes or keep them in the transition area.
Because of your early start time, it is highly recommended to pick-up your race packet on Friday before the race. See the full schedule here. If you cannot make it, please make sure you arrive at least two hours before your start time.
We are using the Pro-System Timing Chip. Because these chips are so sensitive, you will only pick up your timing chip at the Sportstats tent on race day and only as you walk to the swim zone for your wave start. The chip has to be worn on the ankle and returned at the finish line. There will be a $75 fee if you do not return your chip.
Body marking - Volunteers will be waiting for you in front of the big white tent. You may choose to "self body mark" to save time. Numbers go on both arms and outside on both thighs. On your right calf, write your age as of December 31, 2018.
All finishers will receive a finisher's medal and will be able to print a certificate after the race. Top overall male and female will receive a plaque.
Meals are served in the big white tent. Please remember that you swim, bike, run and then you eat - in that order!
The Athletes' Quarters have been fully renovated in 2016 with new washrooms and showers. These facilities are opened to all athletes.
On the bike course, there are 2 port-o-johns located in the "Pits Area". On the run, there are two port-o-johns at the far end of the basin. There are many indoor toilets at the Garage Grand-Prix on the north side of the basin.
Our medical staff will keep an eye on our athletes throughout the race. The medical staff has the right to stop any participant during the race for his/her own safety. However, please remember that if a medic stops you, or if you receive medical attention on the course, this does not mean that you will be disqualified.
Please note that we have numerous "first responders" circling the course. The main medical area with our doctor is located in the Athletes' Quarters near the finish line.
In order to receive a massage, you MUST take a shower first. Massages will be available near the awards tent for all triathletes for a minimal fee.
